Canine Normal Values:
5.5-7.2 g/dL
Feline Normal Values:
5.4-8.9 g/dL
Significance:
Used in the assessment of a variety of diseases
Increases in Values:
May help support the assessment of dehydration. Albumin and globulin levels will also be increased in this case. Chronic inflammation or infection and certain cancers will also elevate total protein levels due to elevations in globulins
Decreases in Values:
Decreased values may indicate protein loss. Typically, the albumin levels will also be low in that situation. Starvation or any problem associated with low protein intake will also result in low total protein levels
