The Central Nervous System (CNS)
1. Integrating and command center of the nervous system2. Consists of the brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
1. Line of communication linking all parts of the body to the CNS
2. Sensory input yields motor output
3. Consists of nerves extending from the brain and spinal cord
4. Sensory (afferent) division – impulses brought toward the CNS
4a. Somatic afferent fibers
4b. Skin, skeletal muscles, joints
4c. Visceral afferent fibers
4d. Organs within the body
5. Motor (efferent) division – impulses brought away from the CNS
5a. Somatic nervous system (voluntary nervous system): Motor nerve fibers conducting impulses from CNS to skeletal muscle
5b. Autonomic nervous system (involuntary nervous system): Motor nerve fibers regulating the activity of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and the glands of the body. Divided into two categories: Sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and Parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest)
