Canine Normal Values:
73-116 mg/dL
Feline Normal Values:
63-150 mg/dL
Significance:
Used in the assessment of a variety of diseases
Severe Increase: >400 mg/dL
Increases in Values:
May help support the diagnosis of insulin deficiency or diabetes mellitus. Increases may also be seen with stress usually noted in cats. Values induced by stress may be as high as 350 mg/dL. These values can be assessed along with a urinalysis to determine if glucosuria is present. If the glucose in cats is high, but no glucosuria is present, this could indicate stress hyperglycemia
Decreases in Values:
Decreased values may support the diagnosis of an insulin secreting tumor, inappetence, or sepsis. Hypoglycemia may result in ataxia, weakness, tremors, seizures, twitching, and an elevated heart rate. Symptoms are generally seen with glucose levels below 60 mg/dL
