Doctor's Order:
Start a Dopamine CRI at 5 mcg/kg/min
Patient Weight:
23 kg
Standard Dilution Protocol (Varies By Hospital):
Dilute Dopamine with 0.9% NaCl where 1 mcg/kg/min = 1 ml/hr and create a 12 hour CRI at that rate
Dopamine Concentration:
40 mg/ml
Convert the Dopamine from mg to mcg:
(40 mg/ml) x (1,000 mcg/mg) = 40,000 mcg/ml concentration of Dopamine
Complete the Math:
(1 mcg/kg/min) x (23 kg) = 23 mcg/min of Dopamine
(23 mcg/min) x (60 min/hr) = 1,380 mcg/hr of Dopamine
(1,380 mcg/hr) / (40,000 mcg/ml) = 0.0345 ml/hr of Dopamine
(0.0345 ml/hr) x (12 hr) = 0.414 ml Dopamine => Rounds to 0.41 ml Dopamine
(12 ml Total Fluid Volume) - (0.41 ml Dopamine) = 11.59 ml 0.9% NaCl
The Result:
You will need 0.41 ml of Dopamine to mix with 11.59 ml of 0.9% NaCl. This will result in 1 mcg/kg/min = 1 ml/hr. To run the Dopamine CRI at 5 mcg/kg/min, increase the fluid rate of your CRI to 5 ml/hr
*Note Per Plumb's as of 10/10/21: "Dopamine is reported to be physically incompatible with amphotericin B, ampicillin sodium, iron salts, metronidazole with sodium bicarbonate, penicillin G potassium, and sodium bicarbonate."
